With Ambien's patent running its term coinciding with April 21, 2007, new generic versions were approved, which do not have the "protective cover" present on the Sanofi name-brand Ambien. It is hard to tell if these changes are caused by Ambien or if they are caused by physical or mental illnesses that you already have or suddenly develop. When you first start taking Ambien, until you know whether the medication will have any "carry over" effect the next day, use extreme care while doing anything that requires complete alertness, such as driving a car or operating machinery. There is evidence from dose comparison trials suggesting a dose relationship for many of the adverse events associated with Ambien use, particularly for certain CNS and gastrointestinal adverse events.

    Medication Dosage

Ambien comes as a tablet and an extended-release tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken as needed at bedtime. Ambien will work faster if it is not taken with a meal or immediately after a meal. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully. The following tables enumerate treatment-emergent adverse event frequencies that were observed at an incidence equal to 1% or greater among patients with insomnia who received Ambien in U.S. placebo-controlled trials.
When Ambien abuse occurs, people may take it orally, crush and snort it, or cook it for an intravenous injection. Ambien abuse can occur when used longer than recommended The table is limited to data from doses up to and including 10 mg, the highest dose recommended for use. The table includes only adverse events occurring at an incidence of at least 1% for Ambien patients. This difficulty sleeping is normal and usually gets better without treatment after one or two nights.
Recently, Ambien has been cited in various medical reports mainly in the United Kingdom as waking persistent vegetative state (PVS) patients, and dramatically improving the conditions of people with brain injuries.
Ambien should only be taken at bedtime. If you did not take Ambien at bedtime and you are unable to fall asleep, you may take Ambien if you will be able to remain in bed for 7-8 hours afterward. Do not take Ambien if you are not ready to go to sleep right away and stay asleep for at least 7-8 hours. It is important to emphasize that, although the events reported did occur during treatment with Ambien, they were not necessarily caused by it.
During short-term treatment with Ambien at doses up to 10 mg, the most commonly observed adverse events associated with the use of Ambien and seen at statistically significant differences from placebo-treated patients were drowsiness. Ambien is a prescription short-acting nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic that potentiates gamma-aminobutyric acid, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, by binding to gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors.
